Garbis Zobian
Garbis Zobian (24th May 1915 - 20 September 2002) was the Romanian Dramatic Tenor of the Bucharest Opera House during the mid to late 20th Century.
Born in Kastamonu, Turkey, on May 24th, 1915; his father was Aram Zobian and his Mother Araxi (Suzmeyan) Zobian. The Family left Turkey in 1923, and settled in Romania.
Garbis Zobian made his Operatic Debut with the Bucharest Opera house in 1949, in the role of Canio From I Pagliacci, by Leoncavallo[1]
His Repertoire also included Radames (Verdi's Aida), Manrico (Verdi's II Trovatore), Otello (Verdi's Otello), Don Jose (Bizet's Carmen), Mario Cavradossi (Puccini's Tosca), Turiddu (Masagni's Cavalleria Rustican), Samson (Saint-Saens' Samson et Dalila), Ghermann (Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spade) and Andrea Chenier (Giordano's Andrea Chenier)[2]
Unfortunately, Romanian Politics of the period meant that Zobian's in person appearances were limited to within the U.S.S.R and its satellite states.
Garbis Zobian immigrated to the United States of America in 1968. In 1973 he married Maria Mina Lazarescu. The couple resided in New York.
Garbis Zobian died in New York, On September 20th 2002.
