Garga Chatterjee is an Indian academic, neuroscientist, and political commentator. He is known for his work in brain and cognitive sciences, as well as his activism for Bengali linguistic rights. Chatterjee is a faculty member at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.[1]

Early life and education

Chatterjee was born in Kolkata, West Bengal.[1] He completed his MBBS at the University of Calcutta and later earned a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from Harvard University.[2]

Academic career

From 2011 to 2014, Chatterjee was a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences.[1] He also served as a lecturer at Lesley University between 2012 and 2013.[1] He joined the Indian Statistical Institute in 2015, where he works in neuroscience and spatial perception research.[3]

Writing and media work

Chatterjee has written extensively for publications such as Scroll.in, focusing on language politics, regional identity, and national discourse.[4] In 2019, he appeared on CNN-News18, speaking in Bengali during a panel debate and sparking discussions about linguistic inclusivity in media.[5]

Controversies

Remarks on Ahom dynasty

In June 2020, Chatterjee referred to Ahom dynasty founder Sukapha as a "Chinese invader", leading to FIRs in Assam and an arrest warrant.[7] He was arrested in August 2022 and released on transit bail.[8] Later, he issued a public apology to the people of Assam and the Tai Ahom community.[9]

Social media remarks

Chatterjee has faced criticism for comments about Hindi-speaking communities and Marwari traders, which some have labelled xenophobic.
