Gary Hynds is a Northern Irish Independent Unionist politician who has served as a Lisburn and Castlereagh Councillor for the Lisburn North DEA since 2023.

Biography[edit]

Hynds was brought up in the working class area of Low Road, Hilden in Lisburn, where he owns a small business.[1]

Political career[edit]

Hynds contested the Lagan Valley constituency for the Northern Ireland Conservatives in the 2019 general election, finishing in sixth place with 955 votes.

He contested the 2022 Assembly election in Lagan Valley as an Independent Unionist, receiving 735 first preference votes and being eliminated after the third count. He aimed to "give the two-faced Alliance Party a bloody nose."[2]

Hynds won a seat on Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council in the Lisburn North DEA in the 2023 election, after being elected on the final count after receiving 890 first preference votes. In June 2024, he welcomed the new Mayor of Lisburn and Castlereagh, Kurtis Dickson, to his position.[3]

Political views[edit]

Hynds is opposed to the Northern Ireland Protocol because he believes it "undermines our Britishness, our citizenship, and makes us tied to the EU."[4] He had left the Conservative Party in opposition to the protocol.[5]
