From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gary Marsden was a professor of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town in South Africa [1]. He began his career at Stirling University in Scotland. As a senior during his undergraduate degree, British professor Harold Thimbleby attracted him to the field of Human Computer Interaction [1]. Following his undergraduate degree Gary pursued a Ph.D. in Middlesex University in London [1]. Gary wrote his thesis paper on interface tools for end users [1]. Following graduation Gary took a lectureship position within the Human Computer Interaction group at the University where he would later help establish the Interaction Design Centre [1]. Gary left his position at the University of Middlesex after four years and took up a position as a lecturer at the University of Cape Town in South Africa in 1999 [1]. It was during his time at the University of South Africa where Gary became internationally known for his work in mobile interface design, design and ICT for development [1]. For his development on ICT4D [2] Gary was awarded ACM SIGCHI's Social Impact Award in 2007 [3]. While in South Africa Gary spent sabbaticals at Microsoft Cambridge and at Waikato University in New Zealand [1]. Marsden was one of only five academics in South Africa to receive a National Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award from the Council on Higher Education and the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa. [4].

Gary co-authored a book with Matt Jones titled "Mobile Interaction Design" which was published in 2006. [5] The book includes chapters on how mobile technology can be leveraged in order to make a positive impact in the developing world. [3]

Besides his academic interests in designing interactions on mobile devices, Gary spent a large amount of his time investigating how computers can be used for the progression of underprivileged communities and the developing world [3]. Gary was an editor of a column titled "Under Development" in a magazine which is aimed at elevating the voices of voices in local developing communities. [3]. He has worked to build a local community of HCI researches and practitioners that serve the South African Institute of Computer Scientists and Information Technologists (SAICSIT), CHI-SA (the South African chapter of SIGCHI), and Afri-Graph (the South African chapter of SIGGRAPH) as well as bringing well-known HCI researchers for keynote presentations in South Africa. [6] [3]

Gary Marsden passed away suddenly of a heart attack while on holiday with his family in Cape Town on December 27, 2013 at the age of 43 [7]. Gary is survived by his wife Gil and their children Holly and Jake. [7].

In recognition of Gary Marsden’s contributions and inspiration in HCI4D and in order to support HCI in the Global South, ACM SIGCHI has established the Gary Marsden Student Development Fund. The fund is especially intended for sponsoring postgraduate students (Master or PhD degree) from and currently based in the Global South to attend SIGCHI sponsored or co-sponsored conferences.[8]
