Gary Quinn

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gary Quinn is a British linguist. He is deaf and a British Sign Language user.

Activity[edit]

Quinn works as an assistant professor at Heriot Watt University, where the main focus of his activity are sign language teaching and linguistics.[1]

In particular, along with Dr Audrey Cameron, he is involved in the British Sign Language Glossaries of Curriculum Terms, which aims at developing a database of signs, definitions and examples related to STEMM subjects[2]. Quinn is part of the multidisciplinary team, which includes other scientists, linguists and teachers. Together they develop technical and scientific signs and definitions, and check each proposed sign for linguistic integrity and scientific correctness[3]. The project has so far collected more than 1500 signs and definitions, which can be looked up through an app [4] or an online glossary divided into six main areas.[5] The Glossaries are a valuable resource to make STEMM disciplines more accessible to teachers, students and professionals[6].

Quinn is involved in scientific outreach as well, producing resources and organising events to make scientific topics available accessible to the wider Deaf public[7][8], or talking about Sign Language linguistics.[9]

Quinn's interest in technology inspired him to compose a poem in Sign Language to commemorate the achievement of Gerry Hughes, the first Deaf person to sail around around the world solo.[10]
