Early Life[edit]

Vaynerchuk, who is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, was born in Babruysk in the Soviet Union (now a part of Belarus), immigrated to New York City in the United States in 1978 when he was just three years old. He spent his early years in the Queens borough of New York City before moving to Edison, New Jersey. At age 14, he started working for his family's retail wine company. He graduated from North Hunterdon High School after his family relocated. In 1998, Vaynerchuk earned a bachelor's degree in management science from Newton, Massachusetts' Mount Ida College.

Career[edit]

Gary started his own journey of creating unique business content as the voice of entrepreneurship online after developing his family firm through what he terms "underpriced attention," including the influence of content, ecommerce, email marketing, and Google AdWords.

Gary delivered a major speech at Web 2.0 in 2008 that would ultimately impact his career. That speech served as the foundation for Gary's $1 million, ten-book contract with HarperCollins, which resulted in the release of his debut book, Crush It! , in 2009. Break It! It went on to establish the framework for Gary's media, marketing, and communication strategies, becoming an international bestseller. He started making angel investments during this time in well-known firms like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Uber, Snap, and Venmo.

Gary then co-founded VaynerMedia in 2009 with his younger brother, AJ Vaynerchuk, replicating what he had done for WineLibrary for other companies and brands. In keeping with his own DNA, Gary started the company in a conference room at Buddy Media without ever seeking out startup money. Nine years later, the business had more than 800 workers and served PepsiCo, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Chase, AbInBev, and other clients.

VaynerMedia has prospered since its inception, developing best-in-class skills in paid media, strategy, full-service creative, influencer marketing, IoT & Voice, eCommerce, personal branding, SMB marketing, and in-house consulting. In 2017, VaynerMedia joined the publishing industry by acquiring top women’s magazine, PureWow, under the Gallery Media Group, and restructured under the holding company, VaynerX. The second media brand under the Gallery Media Group's umbrella, the men's lifestyle brand ONE37, was introduced in the summer of 2018.

True to his word, Gary continued to operate as a media firm on his own while growing his business, penning four additional business books that were New York Times bestsellers, and he also became one of the most in-demand public speakers. Five years after starting #AskGaryVee, an online Q&A show for business and advise, Gary launched DailyVee, a full-fledged vlog that chronicles his life as a CEO.

By creating these pillar shows, Gary created a new content strategy and helped establish the concept of personal branding. Gary currently has more than 44MM followers across all of his social media accounts, and he regularly posts on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok, Snapchat, Spotify, and other platforms.

Additionally, Gary is the host of The GaryVee Audio Experience, a daily-updated top 100 business podcast.

Gary debuted his first pair of custom sneakers in the fall of 2017 in association with K-Swiss. The GaryVee 001 and 002 models were released in November 2017, followed by the GaryVee 003 and 004 models in July 2018 and June 2019, respectively.

Gary's life goal is to attempt to acquire the New York Jets.

Personal Life[edit]

Gary and his family emigrated to the US from Belarus in 1978. Before moving to Edison, New Jersey, he shared a studio apartment with eight members of his family in Queens, New York. Gary frequently refers to himself as a "purebred entrepreneur," having successfully launched a lemonade franchise at the age of seven and gone on to sell toys and baseball cards for tens of thousands of dollars throughout his high school career. At fourteen, he started working for his family's company, bagging ice for $2 per hour. When Gary identified “the internet” as a land-grab opportunity in the late 90’s, he turned his father’s local liquor store (then dubbed “Shoppers Discount Liquors”) into one of the first e-commerce platforms for alcohol in the country — resulting in tremendous top-line growth. Gary changed the company's name to "Wine Library" and over the course of his employment increased revenues from $4 to $60 million.

In 2006, Gary Vaynerchuk launched WineLibraryTV, one of the first long-form serial video series on YouTube, while still working at Wine Library. For five years, Gary created an episode virtually every day. He appeared on national television with Ellen Degeneres and Conan O'Brien thanks to his charisma and amazing capacity for connecting with his neighborhood.
