Gasape is a Burundian online social media and social networking service founded by a Burundian engineer Perry Saxe Gateka, a native of Gitega Province also the founder of a local radio station Humuriza FM.[2][3] It was launched in the economic capital of the country Bujumbura.[4][5] Users post and interact with messages. Registered users can post, like, and comment the posts, but unregistered users can only read them. Users access Gasape through its website interface or its mobile-device application software ("app").[6]

Gasape can be accessed from devices with Internet connectivity, such as personal computers, tablets and smartphones. After registering, users can create a profile revealing information about themselves. They can post text, photos and multimedia which is shared with any other users that have agreed to be their "friend", or, with a different privacy setting, with any reader. Users can also play games, join common-interest groups, buy and sell items or services on Marketplace, and receive notifications of their Gasape friends' activities and activities of Gasape pages they follow or like.

History[edit]

Gasape was launched in Burundi's economic capital Bujumbura on March 4, 2021 by its initial founder Perry Saxe Gateka.[7][8][9] In April 15, at the first Developpers conference in Bujumbura, Gasape announced the launch of the Gasape Developer Platform, providing a framework for software developers to create applications that interact with core Gasape features via the application programming interface.[10][11]

Website[edit]

After registering a free account, Gasape users can customize their profile page, to which they can post a biography about themselves and their interests, post status updates, upload photos, and send and receive messages. There is also an option to upgrade the membership for a monthly or yearly fee, which allows users to see which other users have recently viewed their profile, among other additional features such as being to boost posts to reach a wide audience and get a verification badge. They can also sort videos by most viewed, top rated, and most liked, and send virtual gifts to their friends.

Mobile versions[edit]

Gasape developed a mobile version of its site in April 2021, making Gasape more usable by smartphones with a mobile internet browser. This version allows users to post, comment, share, to send and receive friend requests, play games, and send messages. This mobile version also offers location-based, real-time chat for users.

Android[edit]

Gasape began offering an Android application from March 05 2021, which was downloaded more than 7000 times in its first week. Gasape has added the capability of refreshing data by using the "pulling down" gesture and loading more data by using the "pulling up" gesture.

Messenger[edit]

Gasape Messenger is instant messaging service connected to a user's Gasape account and messages are automatically synchronized across all client's platforms. It allows users to send text messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other content.

Complementing regular conversations, Gasape Messenger lets users make one-to-one and group, voice and video calls. Its Android app has"Chat Heads", which are round profile photo icons appearing on-screen regardless of what app is open, conversations are end-to-end encrypted and has a feature that lets users share photos and videos in a story-format with all their friends with the content disappearing after 24 hours. Gasape Messenger's client application runs on mobile devices using Android OS.[12]
