Gateway Theatre is a multi-venue creative arts space located in the heart of Bukit Merah Central.

History[edit]

The building was originally home to the Dalit Theatre, which screened Tamil movies in the 1980s. Dalit Theatre was one of the two cinemas at Bukit Merah Central.[1]

The building was later revamped into a three-storey theatre in 1998 by TOUCH Community services, a non-profit charitable Christian organisation. The building, which was then known as TOUCH Community Theatre, was used by Faith Community Baptist Church and its charity arm, TOUCH Community services, for more than 15 years.[2]

Construction of Gateway Theatre[edit]

The plot’s 1,516.8-square-metre footprint housed TOUCH Community Theatre [3] until it was demolished in 2014. Constructions started in April that year. [2]

Rebuilding the theatre cost about $50 million [4] and it was largely funded by church members who contributed more than $29.5 million to the project. [2] Some of the existing theatre’s structural elements, such as the base slab and the end wall of the auditorium, were retained in the process. [3]

Opening[edit]

Gateway Theatre was completed in 2017 [5] and it was officially launched over a 3-day Opening Festival from 7 to 9 July. [6] The new nine-storey Gateway Theatre houses a theatre, a black box, a dance studio and seminar rooms with an approximate total capacity of 2,500 people. [3]

Design[edit]

Designed by architectural firm Ong & Ong, Gateway Theatre diverges from the conventional separation between formal and informal spaces. The spatial planning of the building caters for community interaction and incorporates plenty of inviting spaces. [5]

Each floor is unique and non-repetitive. [3] A series of gardens serve as pre-function spaces, weaving green and outdoor spaces from level two to level six. These ‘relief’ spaces addresses the challenge of crowd control by providing attractive informal gathering spaces. [3]

Ong & Ong’s architectural design for Gateway Theatre won the Honourable Mention in Architectural Design/Commercial Architecture in The 2018 Architecture MasterPrize program.[7][8]
