In Indian geopolitics, Gateway to Southeast Asia is a popularly used sobriquet to refer to Northeast India. Sometimes, it also refers to different cities, states, countries and geopolitical realms.

Development

The Northeast India is planned to be made the gateway to South East Asia, for its country, through terrestrial route connectivity to the heart of ASEAN countries, for which the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway is under construction.[1][2][3]

The major factors behind India's northeast becoming a gateway to South East Asia are India's vision conveyed in the three Cs—connectivity, commerce, and cultural commonalities, according to Harsh Vardhan Shringla, the then Foreign Secretary of the Government of India. India's two fundamental pillars of its foreign policy, namely, "Neighborhood First Policy" and "Act East Policy", extend to the development of the gateway to Southeast Asia further.[4][5]

Notable remarks

Prime ministerial remarks

Addressing the Indian diaspora in Thailand,[6][7] while stressing the importance of India–Thailand relations,[8][9] Indian prime minister Narendra Modi, on his first official visit to Thailand, highlighted the significance of Northeast India as the gateway to southeast Asia.[10][11]

“Our focus is to connect India's northeast with Thailand. northeast is being developed as a gateway to south-east Asia. This initiative will immensely strengthen India's act east policy and Thailand's Act West Policy. ... Once the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway is opened, there will be seamless connectivity between both our countries. I am glad that all of you will have a chance to be part of this story.”
