Gather.town (also known as just Gather) is social gathering and communication platform that covers every facet of real life: work, community and play.[1] It part of an increasing amount of companies attempting to build around the concept of a Metaverse. It essentially works like a top-down video game, where each user acts as a playable character in this virtual world. Each user can make their own avatar, customise their spaces to suit their needs, and even visit other virtual offices around the world.
History[edit]
The company was originally spun out from an experiment in social telepresence called Online Town. [2] The project was sunset on May 22nd, 2020 and all source was released publicly on GitHub. [3]
In March of 2021, the company announced taht they raised a Series A round led by Sequoia Capital. Other investors included Index, YC Continuity and angels including Dylan Field, Jeff Weiner and Kevin Hartz.[4]

One of the main use cases of Gather has been for Virtual offices. The Gather company itself works out of a virtual office hosted on it's own platform as well. [5]
