Gatty (Community)
Gatty is a Dravidian, Tulu/Kannada speaking class found mainly in Southern
coastal Karnataka.
People[edit]
Gatty is a community of cultivators. Although cultivation has been a common profession of many caste groups, Gatty community has developed its own identity and culture over a period of time. At the same time it also maintained close ties with other communities of the region, especially in adopting worship of naga (serpent gods), matrimonial system of inheritance, folk traditions and so on. Gatty community is one of the 42 communities which subscribe to the norms laid down by ancient king Bhootala Pandya, who is believed to have been the founder of the matrilineal system of inheritance in the region.
Geographic distribution[edit]
Gattys are mostly found in Dakshina Kannada and Kasaragod district of Kerala.
