Gauri Sankunni (May 8,1895 - February 28, 1951) was an Indian educationalist.[1] She was the first South Indian woman and the second woman in India to gain an MA degree. [1][2]
Birth and Family[edit]
She had a younger brother, barrister and legal scholar A.K. Pavithran.[1]
Childhood and Education[edit]
Sankunni was the first woman from the Ezhava community to obtain the BA degree. The Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) presented her with a gold medal at its session at Thiruvananthapuram in 1917 for this achievement.[1] Continuing her education at the Malabar Christian College and the Presidency College, Madras, she completed an MA in English language and literature.[3] She was the first South Indian woman to gain an MA qualification and one of the first women in India to do so, as well.[4] Her success was celebrated at many functions across the state of Kerala; one man who attended such an event was inspired to name his daughter after Gowri. The child grew up to be KR Gowri Amma.[1]
