Gauthier Van Malderen
Gauthier Van Malderen Gauthier Thomas Andre Van Malderen (born 14 April 1992) is a Belgian entrepreneur and technology executive, best known as the founder and CEO of educational technology company Perlego. Early life and education Van Malderen was born in Brussels, Belgium. He attended Tower House School in London and later the European School of Brussels Uccle.[1] He earned a degree in Economics, Management & Finance from Bocconi University in Milan and completed postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge.[2] Career Early ventures While still a student, Van Malderen created his first business, a website called Teenage Tourist. During his time at Bocconi University, he founded Iconic Matter in 2012, a youth-oriented marketing company that partnered with universities to provide online and on-campus advertising solutions.[3] The company expanded to serve 80 universities across Belgium, Switzerland, and Spain before being sold to a Belgian media group in 2014. Perlego In early 2017, Van Malderen founded Perlego, a digital textbook subscription service often described as "Spotify for textbooks."[4] The platform was created in response to rising textbook costs and aims to provide an affordable alternative while helping publishers combat piracy.[5] The company's initial funding round raised $1 million from angel investors including Peter Hinssen, Alex Chesterman, and Simon Franks.[6] By 2022, Perlego had raised over $75 million from investors including KPN Ventures, Mediahuis, Accelerated Digital Ventures, and former Tesco CEO Sir Terry Leahy.[7][8] Recognition and awards Van Malderen has received several industry recognitions:
