Gazi Peker
Early life and career
Gazi Peker, also known as DJ Gazi, is a Kurdish-born Danish DJ, musician, composer, and actor. He is known for his unique blend of Turkish and electronic music, which is evident in his four released albums.
Musical career
Gazi Peker released his debut album, Kismet, in 2008. The album featured musical contributions from the Kurdish artist Şivan Perwer. In 2018, he released Kurdish Requiem, which presented classical Kurdish folk songs in a modern arrangement. In 2022, he released the album A Sad Song, which combines traditional Kurdish music with Western elements to appeal to a broader audience, particularly young listeners. The song "Sense of Time" from the album was praised for its beautiful saz playing.
In December 2023, Gazi Peker released a mini-album titled Sivan Perwer, The Voice and the Poet, featuring four songs produced in collaboration with Şivan Perwer. In early 2024, he released a new version of the title track from Kurdish Requiem under the name Kurdish Requiem, Single Edit.
In May 2024, he released the single Nebula Lullaby, inspired by Turkish Sufi music. In June 2024, he released two singles: Oh Brother My Brother featuring guest artist Teyre Xerib, which deals with the loss of a beloved brother, and The Echo of India, a tribute to the rich Indian musical tradition.
In early 2025, he released the single Divine Madness in collaboration with the late Kurdish musician Kahtali Ibrahim. On February 1, 2025, he released the single Baran Bari featuring Şivan Perwer as a guest artist, and on February 21, 2025, he released Celestial Serenade, which again draws inspiration from Turkish Sufi music.
Other contributions
Gazi Peker's music has also been featured in other media. The song Oh tha...dearest kismet from his debut album Kismet was used in the Danish TV series The Blekinge Street Gang (2009), which revolves around the Blekingegade gang. His track Thunder Break from Kismet was included on the global compilation CD Made In Turkey Vol. 4 (2009), alongside major Turkish artists such as Sezen Aksu, Sertab Erener, and Ajda Pekkan.
The PainRoad Tease Remix and Mihemedo Remix were included on the compilation album I LOVE KURDISH MUSIC in Germany, alongside artists such as Ahmet Kaya, Aynur Doğan, and Ahmet Arslan.
Awards and nominations
Gazi Peker's track Thunder Break was nominated for Track of the Year at the Danish World Awards in 2008.
