History[edit]

Formation and early work (2013-2018)[edit]

Gearbox Software acquired the rights to the Homeworld series in 2013, from developer THQ.[2][3] The company published the collector’s edition of the Homeworld Remastered Collection in February 2015.[4] Gearbox then worked with Canadian studio Blackbird Interactive to publish Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak.[5][1]

In 2015, Gearbox Publishing was established as separate entity Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford to announced the venture publicly the following year at The Game Awards 2016 pre-show.[6][7] Pitchford also announced that Gearbox Publishing’s first game was a remastered version of Bulletstorm, entitled Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition, from Polish developer People Can Fly. Gearbox Publishing released the game on April 7, 2017 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[8][9] A port for the Nintendo Switch, Duke of Switch Edition, was later released on August 31, 2019.[10]

Gearbox Publishing partnered with Epic Games in 2017 to publish the physical discs of Fortnite for the European market. Discs were released for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.[11]

Compulsion Games founder Guillaume Provost engaged Gearbox about publishing We Happy Few in 2017. Gearbox Publishing released the game in 2018.

Embracer Group Acquisition (2019-present)[edit]

In May 2019, Gearbox established The Gearbox Entertainment Company, Inc. (Gearbox Entertainment) as a holding company for both Gearbox Software and Gearbox Publishing.[12]

The company published Hopoo Games’ third-person shooter Risk of Rain 2 in early access for Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2019, before fully releasing on August 11, 2020.[13] Gearbox Publishing released the first announced PS5 title, Godfall, an action role-playing game developed by Counterplay Games, on Windows and PlayStation 5 on November 12, 2020.[14]

In April 2021, the Gearbox Entertainment Company was acquired by Embracer Group for approximately $1.3 billion, and was added as the Swedish company's seventh major operating group.[15]

Under the Embracer Group, Gearbox Publishing published Tribes of Midgard for Windows, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, in July of 2021,[16] As part of the release, Gearbox and developer Norsfell Games announced a partnership with global reforestation nonprofit One Tree Planted to plant 40,000 trees.[17][18]

On July 14, 2022 Gearbox Published released a twin-stick “roguelight” platformer, Eyes in the Dark: The Curious Case of One Victoria Bloom, with developer Under the Stairs.
