Gebr. Schulz is a German piano brand founded in Mainz in 1888 by the brothers Albert and Franz Schulz.[1] The associated piano store Piano-Schulz is managed by Christoph Schulz, the fifth generation of the Schulz family to do so.[2] Today, Christoph Schulz, together with Frederik Steffes under Steffes & Schulz GmbH,[3] sells pianos and grand pianos nationally and internationally under the Gebr. Schulz brand. The family business is one of the ten largest German piano dealers.[4]
History
Heinrich Schulz (1835-1873), a master piano builder born in Börnecke and son of Johann Schulz, a master linen weaver, became a partner in the piano builder Steinweg in Braunschweig in 1873.[5] After Theodor Steinweg sold his Braunschweig factory to Grotrian, Helfferich and Heinrich Schulz in 1865 to follow his father to America, the instruments were built in Braunschweig under the name Grotrian, Helfferich, Schulz, Th. Steinweg Nachf. until Wilhelm Grotrian paid off his business partners and continued his business alone.[6] After Schulz died in 1873 as a result of pneumonia, his sons were raised by their mother.
In 1888, piano maker Albert Schulz (1864-1931) and merchant Franz Schulz founded the piano manufacturing company Gebr. Schulz in Mainz. Albert Schulz designed new instruments and resonance systems and patented them. The quarter-tone piano was created according to a design by Albert Schulz in 1905, and the instrument is in the Piano-Schulz collection.[7]
After the death of Albert Schulz, his son Günter took over the business. During World War II, the business premises in Mainz were completely destroyed after repeated air raids in September 1944. Schulz had been married to piano teacher Johanna Fey since 1937, with whom he rebuilt the company under the name Piano-Schulz from 1948 and set up a workshop at Zietenring 6. In 1954, the company moved to Bahnhofsstraße 14, and his son Herward Schulz completed his training as a piano maker in his parents' business and gained further knowledge during visits to various piano manufacturers in Germany and abroad. In 1962, another move took place to the newly acquired house at Mühlgasse 11-13 with a showroom area of three floors. Since 2003, Herward Schulz's son Christoph Schulz, who completed his training as a piano maker at Steinway & Sons in Hamburg after graduating from high school, has been running the company together with his wife, the pianist Sabine Schulz née Lediger,[8] in the fifth generation.[5]
Awards
In 2014, on the occasion of the company's 125th anniversary, the company was awarded the gold city plaque of the city of Wiesbaden.[9]
Film
In the film Musical Instruments from Wiesbaden for the Orchestras of the World (2016/2017) by Harald Kuntze and Dorothee Lottmann-Kaeseler, three Wiesbaden instrument makers were portrayed, including the Piano-Schulz company.[10][11][12]
