Gemma Brodie is a Scottish female boxer from Renfrewshire and was one of Scotland's first registered female boxers. Brodie trained at Linwood ABC, being the only female within her boxing club, having taken up boxing in 2010. Brodie was born in Govan.[1]

Career[edit]

At 5ft 2 inches Brodie is smaller than some opponents but believes herself to be naturally feisty[1], and has boxed at several weights including Lightweight, welterweight[2]and Middleweight.[3]

Brodie competed in the Scottish Elite Championship finals in March 2010 but was defeated 10-4 (by Katy Atkin (Team Scotland). The bout was descried as "skilful" and highlighted Brodies aggressive style.[4]

Brodie also fought Gardner Moore 2014 Boxing Scottish National Championship event at the Emirates but was beaten by Gardner Moore[3].Moore and Brodie fought in the 69Kg middleweight category.[5]

Influence[edit]

Brodie has historically distanced herself from female boxers who suggest that boxing in Scotland has traditionally discriminated against females, believing that she has always been supported.[1]. This argument was exacerbated in the 2014 Olympics when it was revealed that Scotland would not field any female Scottish boxers . Brodie has acknowledged that the female boxing team have had to establish themselves through their own hard work and efforts[2]
