Gender apathetic or apagender[2] is a gender identity where an individual is indifferent, or apathetic, toward their own gender identity.[3] Gender apathetic is considered a gender non-conforming identity separate from non-binary, agender, genderless, genderfluid, genderqueer and transgender.[2][4][5][6] It can also be known as gender apathy, greygender, cassgender, inersgender, anvisgender, cis apathetic or trans apathetic.[1][2]

Identity

Gender apathetic people are indifferent towards their own gender identity,[1][7][4][6] and may have no feelings toward one's gender identity.[3] Gender apathetic people may choose to identify with certain aspects of certain labels and genders, though not entirely, as no gender expression fully captures their sense of self.[1][4][4] They can use any pronouns, including neopronouns, and may use pronouns interchangeably.[1][6][2] They often feel indifferent to gendered comments.[4]

In a paper published by Cornell University, Katie Seaborn, Shano Liang, Rua Mae Williams and Phoebe O. Toups Dugas consider gender apathetic to be an "agender adjacent identity", alongside genderless, gender-free and non-binary.[8] Medical News Today and Gayety consider gender apathetic to be a type of non-binary identity, under the non-binary umbrella.[2][4] Gender apathetic individuals may feel isolated from others as a result of their gender identity, and doubt their own understanding of their gender.[7][4] The identity is often misunderstood, leading to judgment and misconceptions forming around it.[7]
