Gender neutral uniforms
A gender neutral uniform policy refers to a distinctive type of clothing worn by the members of different genders within the same organization or body while participating in that organization's activity.
Focusing on the practicality of this policy, supporters adorn it for encouraging individual beliefs, ideas, passions, and wellbeing, as well as an ethos of camaraderie that is reflected in the shared experience. Costume designers and specialists of a gender neutral uniform argue that it can dilute "the status placed on expensive clothes" and challenge "the belief that we are defined by what we wear."[1]
A number of schools throughout the United Kingdom have already decided "to change their uniform policy to a more gender-neutral approach in an effort to show sensitivity toward transgender children, and are now allowing boys to wear skirts and dresses." Diversity supporters have suggested that "the policies currently in use could be seen as discriminatory toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" members of the society.[3]
Responses
Feminist activists stage protest on "the change to uniform policy" and regard it as a serious challenge for the fast fashion styles which are a big contributor to climate change.[4] From their viewpoint "it is really important young people have a choice in the clothes they wear, that they don’t feel forced to wear trousers or dresses but can instead pick what feels most comfortable for them."[5]
