General Service Area

General Service Area is a name given by the Canadian province of Nova Scotia to describe the boundaries of a geographic area that are communities or place names located within a municipality (which can be an incorporated county, a municipal district, or a regional municipality by which all street names are uniquely coded for the delivery of the NS E911 ,emergency and municipal, services.

The Government of Nova Scotia designates General Service Areas by means of the Department of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, except within Halifax Regional Municipality, where it administers its own civic addressing through the Civic Addressing Office, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and Region of Queens. The Nova Scotia Geomatics Centre administers place names in Nova Scotia as well as the Nova Scotia civic address file. The names of placenames are forwarded to the Geographical Names Board of Canada.
