General collective intelligence

Emanuela Gardner was born in Verona in 1952 and grew up in Rome. She studied philosophy in Rome and has always been interested in painting and photography. After living for two years in London and two years in India, she arrived in New York in 1981, where she joined the Art Student League to continue her painting. During this period, she received an assignment from Vogue Italia magazine to carry out a photoshoot of the painter Jeff Koons. From here began her career as a portrait photographer which continued for twenty-five years.

Career

She is known for her portraits of personalities from the world of American culture and has photographed the likes of Raoul Julia, Carl Bernstein, Jeff Koons, Leo Castelli, and Walter Cronkite. After living for two years in London and two years in India, she arrived in New York in 1981, where she joined the Art Student. Emanuela has also experience as a landscape photographer. She has exhibited in many cities, including Los Angeles, New York, Rome. June 2007, in a personal exhibition at the Galleria Monserrato “Arte '900 California Dreams” she reinterprets and reinvents Nature giving new significance to the plant life of California. In November 2008 Emanuela Gardner turns a critical eye towards Times Square in her exhibition entitled "The New Times Square: The Pornography Of Global Media" at the Merge Gallery, New York City. The exhibit was a visual depiction of Debord's famous political and cultural theory which asserts that "all that once was directly lived has become mere representation." The layered reflections portray Times Square not just geographically, but as a sort of universe of images to be absorbed by the mind of the spectator. Many of the exhibits look like oversized color negatives, not traditional pictures, and this consequently made her images more intriguing. A series of 22 black and white photographs of Rome in 2011, show a silent and suspended city, like an immense ghost town populated by sculptural presences that recall its long history; a city of unreal beauty, where glory, light, and stone prevail. This work not only depicts the classic Rome as we know it, but minute research into details that are unseen or invisible are unveiled by the author’s scrupulous eye. In September 2016 she wrote to Diego Mormorio in the text of the catalogue “Of Central Park: “ a large green rectangle populated by a colorful infinity of life (is what we always see). On the other hand, (we can also see) silent bronzes, mysterious figures … who seem to be waiting for someone to spark some life into them". The adept eye of Emanuela gives identity to these anonymous inhabitants of Central Park, New York; a unique corner of the world that is removed from the laws of time and history in which Giuseppe Mazzini meets Alice (of Wonderland) and where Shakespeare, Christopher Columbus and the heroic soldiers of the Seventh Regiment of New York all belong to the same condominium. To make the portraits as stark as possible, Gardner eliminated the vegetation and chose the harsh New York winter, when temperatures drop below freezing and hands are so numb that even changing the camera roll becomes a complex operation.
