Generation (You Employed)[edit]
Generation You Employed (Generation) is a nonprofit organization that provides training to people, and then places and supports them in their professionnal integration.
Generation's stated mission is to “transform education to employment systems to prepare, place and support people into life-changing careers that would otherwise be inaccessible.”.
The organization works with employers and community partners in 14 countries to launch accelerated training programs for high-demand, entry-level or newly created jobs. Generation’s training programs target both young adults and mid-career workers who are disconnected from the workforce or underemployed..[1] Most Generation training programs are free for learners.[1]

Generation was founded in 2014 as the first nonprofit developed by McKinsey & Company-founded nonprofit, McKinsey Social Initiative (MSI). In May 2015, Dr. Helen D. Gayle was appointed the inaugural CEO of MSI[2] and Dr. Mona Mourshed became the founding President and CEO of Generation[3][4]
Generation first launched its programs in 5 countries in 2015 : USA, Kenya, India, Mexico and Spain.
In 2018, Generation launched in 4 new countries : Hong -Kong, Italy, Pakistan, and Singapore. By the end of this year, over 24,600 learners worldwide had graduated from Generation programs in a total of 9 countries.[5]
Generation received in 2018 a WISE Award at the Qatar Foundation’s World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE).[6]
In 2019, Generation launched the ReGeneration initiative focused on re-skilling mid-career workers whose jobs have been displaced, or are at risk of displacement, due to automation and digitization.[7]The first pilot programs began in Singapore and the United States.
Also in 2019, Generation launched in the United Kingdom[8], France[9], Australia[10] and Brazil[11]
In February, 2020, the MacArthur Foundation announced that Generation was one of the Top 100 in its 100&Change competition for a single $100 million grant to help solve one of the world’s most critical social challenges.[12]
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Generation created coalitions with healthcare, academic and business partners to create online courses to train healthcare workers in how to treat and care for COVID-19 patients.[13] Upskilling courses for nurses and medical staff have been launched online in Italy[14], Mexico, India[15], Spain[16] and France. Many Generation programs are now being moved online for remote learning.[17]
Program model and impact[edit]
Each country office works with local employers to identify the programs that Generation will implement in addition to the age and qualification requirements for prospective learners. In total, there are currently 26 Generation training programs for fields that include health care, customer service, technology, and skilled trades. Each Generation program’s curriculum is developed alongside an employer partner and incorporates technical skills, behaviors, and mindsets. Technical skills include role- specific knowledge that is essential to performing the job.[18]
The Rockefeller Foundation partnered with Generation to create a Cost-Per-Hire Calculator “a digital tool that allows employers to input data and calculate the cost-per-hire across direct hiring, onboarding and training, productivity, vacancy coverage, and turnover.” The goal of the calculator is to highlight pain points of the hiring process for entry-level jobs and demonstrate how a specific intervention can influence the company’s cost-per-hire.[19]
As of April 2020, there are more than 37,000 graduates in the 13 Generation countries- and 153 cities, with a 80% job placement rate, Mourshed said in a interview for The Independent.[20]
