The Geneva Jets Australian Football Club, nicknamed the Jets, is an Australian Football club based in Geneva, Switzerland. Founded in 2018, the club competes in the AFL Switzerland League and was one of the competition's three founding clubs in 2019.

History[edit]

Discussions surrounding the establishment of an Australian Football club in Geneva began in August 2018 and training commenced the following month. The club's first matches were in Winterthur on 18 November 2018 during a friendly round-robin tournament with the Winterthur Lions and Basel Dragons with Geneva winning both their matches to be named tournament champions.[1][2]

The club was inaugurated on 14 December 2018.

Seniors[edit]

In 2019, the AFL Switzerland senior home and away season consisted of 5 rounds with each team playing 40-minute matches against the other two teams during the day. In Round 1, Geneva lost their only match of the season after being defeated by Basel. The Jets continued the remainder of the season undefeated and won the Grand Final against Basel on 14 September 2019 at Vessy Sports Centre in Geneva.[3]

Reserves[edit]

With large player numbers, Geneva was able to field a reserves side in 2019 and each home and away around was opened with the reserves match. The reserves team played against the Northern Bears, a combined team of developing and reserve players from the two other established sides, Basel and Winterthur, and players from elsewhere in Switzerland, notably Zurich. The season consisted of 6 matches with the premiership awarded to the team finishing first on the ladder. In 2019, Geneva won the premiership with four wins from six games.

Club song[edit]

The club's song is "Jets of Geneva" and was written by Matthew Serventy and Greg Arnold.
