From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Geo Constantinescu (prose writer, literary critic, associate professor (PhD)) was born in the commune of Benești-Bălcești, Vâlcea County, on 22 October 1956.

Geo Constantinescu (prose writer, literary critic, associate professor (PhD))

He attended primary school at the general school in his native village, Irimești, between 1963 and 1971.

He continued his secondary studies at “Frații Buzești” High School in Craiova, evening program, and passed the baccalaureate in 1977.

During this period he worked as a laborer at the aircraft factory in Craiova and attended the creative meetings of the “Cezar Petrescu” literary circle at the House of Culture of the “Electroputere” Works, and later those of the House of Culture of the city of Craiova, where high school and university students were active, and where the creative atmosphere was freer and more demanding. From there, colleagues of his generation (Iovan Valeriu, Mihai Măceș, etc.) entered the literary field. At “Frații Buzești” High School there was also a serious literary circle, under the guidance of Professor Marian Barbu. There he was a schoolmate of the future poets Constantin Urucu and Carmen Grădinaru.

In 1977 he was admitted to the full-time program of the Faculty of Philology of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romanian–Spanish section, under the “subject to conscription” category. He completed the compulsory nine-month military service, and from 1978 he attended the courses of the institution, graduating in 1982. During this time he published book, film, and theatre reviews in the student magazine “Napoca universitară”, as well as literary prose.

While working as a teacher of Romanian language and literature at the I–X School in the town of Borsec, Harghita County (1982–1987), he published literary reviews in the literature magazine “Echinox” (of students from Cluj-Napoca), participating in its scientific activities, as well as those organized by the Harghita County School Inspectorate.

From 1977 to 1990 he worked as a film editor at the Harghita County Cinematographic Enterprise, where he published film and literary reviews in the local newspaper “Informația Harghitei”. From 1990 to 1993 he worked as an editor for the Bucharest weekly “Viața CM”, and later in the culture section of the newspaper “Azi”, where he founded the supplement “Fețele culturii”, sold every Wednesday together with the newspaper.

In 1993 he was admitted to doctoral studies at the University of Bucharest, where he obtained a PhD in Philology in 2002 with the dissertation “The Romanian Novella in the Interwar Period”, supervised by Professor Dumitru Micu.

Between 1996 and 2022 he served as a lecturer and later associate professor of Spanish language and literature at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Craiova.

In 2000 he received an AECI scholarship for the titles of professor and researcher in the field of Spanish language and literature in Madrid, where—besides the required courses and activities—he also learned about part of the intellectual activity of Romanian émigrés who were active in Spain between 1944 and 1989.

Throughout this period he published 44 studies in university/academy yearbooks, collective volumes (festschrifts, memorial volumes, in memoriam volumes), 66 studies/essays and articles on literary topics in specialist journals, and presented 28 papers at scholarly events—conferences, congresses, symposia, colloquia—both in Romania and abroad.

As an author, he published: El modernismo en la narrativa breve de Gabriel Miró, Editura Aius, Craiova, 2000; Nuvela, permanență a epicului, Editura Universitaria, Craiova, 2004; Poesía española del siglo XX (hasta el año 1939), Editura Scrisul românesc, Craiova, 2009; Literatura spaniolă contemporană, Editura Universitaria Craiova, 2013; Carul cu pere (literary prose), Editura Ramuri, Craiova, 2015; Întoarcerea istoriei. Literatură diaristică și de memorii, Editura Eikon, Bucharest, 2020.

He translated to and from Spanish: Malvinas. Poema, Spanish–Romanian bilingual edition, with a foreword by George Popescu, Editura Aius, Craiova, 2010; Ion Munteanu, Octav Calleya, en el atril de la vida, Spanish translation by Geo Constantinescu, Editorial Fundación Málaga, 2013; Constantin Pădureanu, Focuri pe colnic / Fuegos por el acero, Spanish version by Geo Constantinescu, Editura Aius, Craiova, 2015.
