George Chiang is a Taiwanese-Canadian actor, writer, lyricist and composer. Chiang wrote and composed the musical, Golden Lotus, which won the Hong Kong English Drama Award for "Best Original Work" at the 2015 Hecklers Awards. [1] He also authored the book, The Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing, which won two 2017 Global Ebook Awards for best "Children's Literature Fiction" and "Juvenile Fiction." [2][3]
Early Life[edit]
Chiang was born in Ottawa, Ontario. The son of Taiwanese immigrants, he moved across the province with his parents to Toronto when he was two years old. His father, Cheng San, was an engineer and culminated his career with a Canadian diplomatic posting at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. Chiang's mother, Ching Mei, worked in the credit department at Eaton's head office, in Toronto, for many years. He grew up in Rexdale, where he played competitive baseball and hockey. He received his high school diploma from Etobicoke Collegiate Institute. Chiang attended the University of Guelph where he competed for their indoor track team and received his B.A. in History. Acting[edit]
Chiang took theatre courses and performed in plays at the University of Guelph. During the summer breaks he performed stand-up comedy and trained his improvisation skills with Theatresports in Toronto. While acting in a play at the university, he was spotted by a Toronto talent agent in attendance who signed him. Chiang began his acting career by appearing in many plays in Toronto and spent a season at Canada’s flagship theatre, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where he performed in Othello and Twelfth Night.[7] He has appeared in many film and television productions which include Disney's Eloise at the Plaza, McKenna Shoots for the Stars, Dark Matter and Diabolik. Musicals[edit]
Chiang wrote and composed the musical, Golden Lotus, which received its world premiere on September 12, 2014 at the Y-Theatre in Hong Kong. Golden Lotus is based on the classic Chinese novel, Jin Ping Mei. The story centres around the forsaken title character whose desire for true love leads her into a bloody path of forbidden love and passion. The musical is a sung through musical with a score that is a mix of pop rock songs mixed with Chinese instrumentation [9] The musical was nominated for three Hong Kong English Drama Awards for "Best Show", "Best Actress" (Harriet Chung) and won for "Best Original Work" at the 2015 Hecklers Awards. Golden Lotus: Sounds From The Musical was released on May 31, 2015. It is an album consisting of fifteen songs from the Hong Kong production of Golden Lotus, written and composed by Chiang, as they appeared in the Hong Kong world premiere. Recorded in Toronto with Harriet Chung as Golden Lotus, Charles Azulay as Wu Sung, Thom Allison as Xi Men, George Chiang as Wu Da, Stacey-Lea Marhue as Madam Wang, Scott Watanabe as the District Intendant, Pierre Bayuga as the Fruit Peddler and Josette Jorge as Ping. Music directed by Tim Stiff. Music arrangements by George Gao.[12]
Books[edit]
The Railroad Adventures of Chen Sing concerns a teenage boy who ventures to North America to build the transcontinental railway through the Rocky Mountains. There are disasters, encounters with wild animals, friendships and unforeseen events that mark Sing's journey. The book was inspired by stories told to Chiang by Ike Sing whose father is the title character of the book. The chapter book for young readers, published in March, 2017 contains full colour illustrations by Jessica Warner and is available in hardcover, paperback and ebook formats. [13][14] The book won two 2017 Global Ebook Awards for best "Children's Literature Fiction" and "Juvenile Fiction". [15][16]
