George Frangos (Greek: Γεωργιος Φραγκος, 19 November 1936 - 24 February 2011) was a Greek-Canadian businessman and artist.

Personal Life

Frangos was born in Athens, Greece, in 1936. His father, born and raised in Kardmyla on the island of Chios, was a shipping captain who traveled for months at a time. Frangos moved to Montreal, Canada with his mother and younger brother in 1950 and attended high school there. He moved to New York in 1953 when he was accepted to New York University. He graduated from NYU in 1957. In 1964, he entered the family shipping business. He married Ioanna Bartsocas in 1967, and the couple had three sons. Frangos died on 24 February 2022, at the age of 74.[1]

'Career as an Artist'

Frangos was self-taught as a painter. Early in his career, he experimented with various styles and techniques, mostly employing oils. Over a fifty-year period, he painted numerous paintings on canvas focusing primarily on line and color. He held two successful exhibitions, both in Athens: one in 1996 and the second, a group show, in 2002. Extremely private in his work, he shunned the limelight preferring to display his works to a limited audience of family and close friends. The few works he chose to part with are in private collections in New York, London, and Athens.[2] His first work to go on sale was at the "20th Century Art: A Different Perspective" auction at Sotheby's.[3]
