George Le Cronier

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

George Le Cronier (1796-27 February 1846) was a Centenier[clarification needed] of the Honorary Police in the island of Jersey. He is notable for being the only member of the Honorary Police to have been killed in the line of duty.[1][2]

History[edit]

Le Cronier was a merchant, having established an ironmonger at 19 Broad Street in 1833. By 1841 he was operating from 17 Broad Street and was a member of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce. He married Susanne Le Brocq of La Fontaine, St Peter and they had four sons and four daughters. Le Cronier was a Centenier for the parish of St. Helier.

Murder[edit]

On Sunday the 19th February, he visited Mulberry Cottage in Patriotic Street, which was operating as a brothel, and arrested eleven prostitutes living there.

On 26 February 1846 the following Sunday, Le Cronier and a Constable's Officer returned to the brothel, intending to arrest the madam operating it and her husband. As Cronier attempted to arrest the madam, Marie Le Gendre, she stabbed him in the stomach with a knife, upon which the Constable's Officer fled the house crying "Murder".

Le Cronier died the following day and Le Gendre was subsequently found guilty of manslaughter, by which she avoided the death penalty for murder. In April 1846 she was banished to Van Diemen's Land, Australia on the ship "Elizabeth & Henry".[3][4] [5]

Legacy[edit]

Le Cronier was buried in Green Street Cemetery, where his grave is marked by a 25-foot tall granite memorial. He was the subject of a 2012 book by Theodore Dalrymple titled "The Policeman & The Brothel: A Victorian Murder".[6]
