George Matsobane Hlanga (March 7, 1992) is a South African softball player for the Proteas, South African men's national softball team and USSA, originally from Ga-mashashane, Limpopo. He played the positions of batter and catcher.

Early life

George was born in Ga-mashashane, Limpopo to parents Anna and John Hlanga. George attended Mmaphuti High School (Ga-mashashane, Limpopo). He joined a local softball club, red scorpions at the age of 10.

TUT

George took his career to the next level when he enrolled at Tshwane University of Technology TUT Soshanguve campus in 2014 and joined the softball team. He was one of the best batters in the team and also won the player of the year from 2014 to 2016. In 2016 he won the sportsman of the year.

USSA

He is also playing for USSA, (University Sport South Africa), where he was one of the best players and even got a trophy for third-best batter. He then joined a local softball club called Tembisa Classic that plays in a league under the GASA (Gauteng Softball Association) where he played as a catcher. They played in a second annual cancer tournament hosted by VUT in 2016 where they became second place.

National Team

George joined the national team as a senior men's softball player/catcher. George joined the national team as a senior men's softball player/catcher in 2018, and has represented Team SA in the African qualifiers at Mbolekwa Stadium, Atteridgeville in 2019 where they played against Lesotho and Botswana. George will be representing the national senior men's team at the world championships in Czech Republic from June 13–23.

Professional career

George will be playing his first professional season in the Czech Republic.

Awards

He was awarded the best player of the year during his university days at TUT from 2014 to 2016 and also won the sportsman of the year in 2016. In 2018, he won the USSA best batter award in the men’s division of the tournament. George represented the USSA and achieved third place in the NPC (National Provisional Champion) tournament in 2019.
