George Spiller
George Spiller (December 1845, Nelson County, Virginia, USA - April 14, 1931, Jacksboro, Texas) was an American surveyor, abstractor, and insurance executive. He studied civil engineering at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and served in the American Civil War as a part of the school's corps of cadets. After the war, he completed his education at VMI, graduating in 1866.[1] In the Fall of 1865 he was initiated into Alpha Tau Omega making him a charter member of the Alpha chapter.[2]
Career[edit]
Spiller's career in civil engineering began in Alabama with the Mobile and Montgomery Railroad Company and later in Louisiana. In 1872, he relocated to Graham, Texas, and co-founded the land and surveying firm Graham, Hillard, and Spiller. His district as a surveyor after 1876 included sixteen counties. Spiller married Belle Loving, granddaughter of the famed Oliver Loving, and became an influential figure in the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.[1]
Later years and legacy[edit]
He returned to Jack County in 1884, establishing a successful insurance and abstract business in Jacksboro, where he later served as county surveyor for two decades.[1]
