George W. Chilson was born in Wayne County, Michigan, to Rufus Chilson and Catherine Downes. On August 15, 1862, he enlisted as a Corporal in Company F, 24th Michigan Infantry Regiment. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, but was released due to his injury as the enemy retreated.[1] He was promoted to sergeant on May 1, 1864, and to first lieutenant on May 6, 1864. After the Battle of Hatcher's Run in February 1865, Brevet Brigadier General Henry A. Morrow stated in his after-action report that Chilson "deserve(s) credit for (his) coolness and the efficient manner in which (he) discharged (his) duties."[2] He mustered out with his unit in Detroit, Michigan on June 30, 1865.
He reenlisted on February 23, 1866, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 14th Infantry Regiment. He was again promoted to first lieutenant on July 9, 1866, and transferred to the 32nd Infantry Regiment on September 21, 1866. On April 19, 1869, he transferred to the 21st Infantry Regiment. He was not assigned to a unit from August 16, 1869 to December 15, 1870, and at that time was transferred to the 8th Cavalry Regiment. He was promoted to Captain on December 28, 1871, and served with the 8th Cavalry until his death in 1881.[3]
