The Georgetown Security Studies Review (GSSR) is a peer-reviewed academic journal covering security studies, military affairs, and international security. Originally established in 2012 as the Global Security Studies Review, GSSR is the oldest completely student-run security studies journal in the United States.[citation needed][dubious ] As the official academic review of Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service's Center for Security Studies, the GSSR's stated mission is "to contribute to security policy debates by exposing both specialists and general interest readers to a wide array of perspectives on both current and historical international affairs issues."[1] As of September 2016, the 7th and current GSSR editor-in-chief was Morgan Byrne-Diakun.[2]
History and Distribution[edit]
Originally founded as the Global Security Studies Review in 2012, the Georgetown Security Studies Review adopted its current name in 2013.
Organization[edit]
The GSSR Editorial Board has varied in size, composition, and organization over time. In addition to the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor, a number of associate editors focused on regional and/or functional areas help lead the staff of GSSR. Additionally, GSSR maintains a staff of columnists, reporters, and peer reviewers. All columnists, reporters, and members of the Editorial Board are students in the Security Studies Program (SSP) at Georgetown University.[3][4]
Format[edit]
The Review[edit]
GSSR publishes a peer-reviewed academic journal in print format bianually, once in the winter and once in the spring. Also known as The Review, the print journal features article-length submissions from graduate students, alumni, and faculty from Georgetown University, in addition to occasional submissions from external contributors.[5]
The Forum[edit]
In addition to its print journal, GSSR publishes short-form analytical columns on its website on a year-round basis. Popularly known as The Forum, the online medium of the GSSR features submissions from members of GSSR columnist staff, Georgetown University students, and students and faculty from other graduate programs in related fields.[6]
Editorial Board[edit]
The GSSR Editorial Board is composed exclusively of students from the Georgetown Security Studies Program, a master's degree program within the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.[7] The following individuals have held the position of Editor-in-Chief of the GSSR:
