Georgije Koda

Georgije Koda (Novi Sad, Habsburg Monarchy, 9 March 1811 - Novi Sad, Austria-Hungary, 13 February 1891) was a merchant, philanthropist and public worker in Novi Sad.

Biography

Originating from the Cincar family.[1] He traveled to Germany, Italy, England and France, and in 1842 he married Justina, the daughter of the Zagreb merchant Janko Malin, and had nine children. He was engaged in trade with his father, and from 1848 on his own. He was a representative of cobblestones, town and market taxes, and from 1858 to 1869, of the vast land along the Danube, which was used as pasture, marsh and land for cultivation. He was the first to introduce bookkeeping in the Novi Sad municipality and was the founder and member of the Novi Sad Savings Bank. He submitted a draft regulation on the issuance of money for loans and a draft form for bonds in 1864.[2]

He was a member of Matica srpska (since 1867) and a member of its Board of Directors (1868-1887), a member of the Committee for drafting "Instructions on issuing money for loans" from Matica's funds and a member of the Committee for examining financial possibilities for buying a building for Matica Srpska. [2]

As the president of the Greek church community, he proposed that this municipality join the school fund from which it paid teachers for Greek students to the Serbian Gymnasium Fund so that the teacher became a full grammar school teacher and Greek a regular subject, which was achieved in 1873. He was also the president of the Serbian Reading Room in Novi Sad (until 1879), treasurer of the Theater Central Board, first president (1862-1863) and member of the Economic Department of the Serbian National Theater [3], founder and contributor of the Karlovac High School, and with Marko Popović and Marko Nikolić he built an Orthodox chapel in Petrovaradin.

As a respectable citizen of Novi Sad, he was elected to the Committee that went to Pest to consult with the Minister of Trade on Labor Law (1876). In addition to his father's house, he also had a house in Kazandžijska (today Jovana Subotića) Street, which he leased to the City of Novi Sad. He retired from business in 1879 and transferred them to his son Dimitrije, who opened the "Banking Exchange Office D." in Novi Sad in 1872. Koda ”and ran a colonial goods store. Son Alexander was a doctor.

His portrait, the work of painter Novak Radonić, is in the Matica Srpska Gallery.

He was buried in the Assumption Cemetery in Novi Sad. [2]
