GeoScienceWorld is a non-profit committed to Earth science research. It was established as a joint venture by six leading geoscience societies[2] and the American Geological Institute (AGI), with the collective goal of supporting small-scale scientific journals by making their content available widely and digitally.

GeoScienceWorld [3] (GSW) was founded in 2004 with the aim of enabling geoscience societies to better serve their discipline and community through collaboration. The founders hoped that by accumulating peer-reviewed journal research into an online non-profit aggregate, they could convey cooperative advantages to the societies involved, growing and uplifting smaller organizations through the support of their larger colleagues.

In 2017, they migrated their platform to Silverchair Information Systems. This allowed them to add society service programs, such as cost-effective hosting opportunities, and to reorient towards open access publishing.

  • To be a comprehensive, widely accessible, easy-to-use, integrated, and cost-effective online resource for research materials in the geological and Earth Sciences.
  • To operate independently and not for profit, with policies and practices that respect and support the needs of publishers, authors, educators, researchers, and librarians.
  • To respond effectively to evolving research, presentation, and education technology for the creation, maintenance, operation, dissemination, and preservation of geoscience information and interactive facilities.
  • To protect the viability and independence of society publishing programs while constantly exploring and incorporating valuable economic and strategic benefits of collaboration.
