Biography[edit]

Geradine Wilhelmine Christine Harthoorn, called Géryke Harthoorn, was born on December 21, 1913 in Pandang, Celebes, in the former colony of the Dutch East Indies (today Makasar, Sulawesi, Indonesia). Her father was Prof. Dr. Dr. Martin August Gustav Harthoorn, born June 18, 1884 in Meester-Cornelis in Batavia, died June 17, 1969 in Driebergen, Netherlands, a dutch lawyer and president of the court at Batavia, Dutch East Indies; her mother was Gerardina Willemina Christina Brunsveld van Hulten, born December 10, 1872 in Batavia, died April 19, 1943 in Djember. In the 1930 years she came to the Netherlands. On a study trip in Scotland, she met George Kennedy Young, at this time a journalist, and married him in June 1939. Her husband began a career in counter-espionage in World War II, then in the British Secret Intelligence Service SIS, later on at the Military Intelligence Service MI6. The marriage remained childless. G. Harthoorn wrote several books in which she compared the way of life in Southeast Asia with those in the western world. Her experiences from the Dutch East Indies, where she had spent part of her life, flowed into this.
