Gerald L. “Jerry” Katell (born Jan. 29, 1941) is a commercial and industrial real estate developer who lives in Pacific Palisades, CA.

Career

After establishing his 12-year career in commercial real estate development, Jerry Katell opened Katell Properties, LLC[1] in 1976 and developed over five million sq. ft. of office, industrial and commercial real estate projects in southern California including Agoura Hills Business Park, Valencia Technology Park and Chesterfield Square. Katell Properties[2] is located at 100 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1755, Santa Monica CA.

Flagship Projects

Northridge Business Park, Northridge CA[3]

Developed over one million sq. ft. of office and industrial buildings for a variety of office users and manufacturing and warehousing companies, including the corporate headquarters of Great Western Savings and Loan Association 1980-1983

Agoura Hills Business Park[4], Agoura Hills, CA

Developed a 34 acre business park containing 360,000 sq. ft., for Teradyne, Inc., corporate headquarters for J.D. Powers, Hamptons Inn Hotel and office space for multiple users. (1984-1992).

Valencia Technology Park[5], Valencia CA

Largest single land sale by the Valencia Company, (parent company, Newhall Land and Farming) and the development contained over 700,000 sq. ft. of office and industrial space. (1986-1993)

Chesterfield Square[6], South Los Angeles, CA

250,000 sq. ft. shopping center at Slauson and Western with tenants including Home Depot, Ralph’s Food for Less and Starbucks, it was the first major shopping center to be developed in South Los Angeles. (1996-2002)

Warner Ridge[7] in Woodland Hills, CA

Acquired 34 acre parcel that had been entitled for 690,000 sq. ft. office and 150 apartments, and due to market conditions and adjoining residential community, Katell rezoned the office portion to 453 apartments, which cut the height of the buildings from six to three stories and reduced traffic generation by 75%. (1996)

Philanthropy

Walt Disney Concert Hall[8], served on the building committee and board of directors. (1997-2003)

LA’s BEST[9], served as board chair (1998-2007). LA’s BEST provides after school education and enrichment for the poorest elementary school children in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Katell helped grow the organization from serving 3,000 children in 21 schools to 28,000 children in 180 schools. In 2007 he became Chair Emeritus. (1996-current)

Katell served on the board of directors for both Los Angeles Music Center, (2003-2006) and Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. (1999-2006)

Early Life and Education

Born and raised in New York, Katell was the only child of Abraham and Sylvia (Merker) Katell. He attended grade schools in Brooklyn and Cambria Heights, New York, followed by Levittown Memorial High School.

In 1962 Katell received his S.B. in Civil Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology[10], and in 1964 his MBA at Stanford Business School

Personal Life

Katell resides in Pacific Palisades, CA. and was married to Linda (Frantz) Katell (1964-1987) and Sharon (Prewitt) Katell (1991-1999).

His pastimes include landscape and portrait photography[11], and has had four shows: Edgemar Center for the Arts, Santa Monica, CA. (2007), Icipici Gallery, Rome, Italy (2008), Jeanie Madsen Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. (2011), and People and Places Popup Show, Westwood, CA. (2019).

In 2000 Katell began a career in acting and has appeared in both television and movie roles[12] including The Retrievers (2001), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines[13] (2003), The Ripple Effect (2007).
