focused on film directing, shifting to authoring and publishing from the 1980s onwards.

He was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and has lived in Los Angeles, Aspen, New York, London, the south of France, and currently lives in Napa, California.

Early Years

Gerald Seth Sindell was born in 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio to David and Grace Sindell (née Tabakin), one of three siblings. He began his education at Shaker Heights High School, where he became president of the city-wide Cleveland Youth Council on Human Relations[1] a large and effective organization to promote interracial understanding – a spinoff from the National Council of Christians and Jews, now known as the National Conference for Community and Justice. From 1957-1962 he spent summers at the Interlochen Center for the Arts studying organ, flute, counterpoint, directing and conducting. Then, in 1962, he began studies of English and Music at New York University, completing studies in pre-med and pre-law at Ohio State University in 1965.

As a teenager he worked weekends at his father’s law firm in the photo studio and lab, becoming expert in the studio's Speed Graphic, Voightlander, and Leica still cameras, and Bell & Howell 16mm film camera, as well as developing and printing pictures that would be used as evidence in court.

Career

Film

As Gerald Seth Sindell his first feature motion picture, Double-Stop (1968), produced by his brother Roger Ivan Sindell, was an American nomination to the Cannes Film Festival and won the Silver Phoenix at the Atlanta International Film Festival for 'World's Best Feature Motion Picture.' It starred Jeremiah Sullivan, Mimi Torchin and Anthony Walsh.

Sindell’s second movie in 1971 was Harpy[2] a story based around the rare harpy eagle which he produced and directed for CBS Cinema Center, starring Elizabeth Ashley and Hugh O’Brian and featuring a rare and huge harpy eagle, (played by four harpy eagles). Kevin Thomas, reviewing Harpy in the Los Angeles Times, wrote, "Harpy is that rare film in which every element is precisely integrated. It is a triumph of style.”[3].

In 1974 his third film, originally titled The Real Thing and subsequently re-titled, Teenager, starred Andrea Cagan, Reid Smith, Sue Bernard and Joe Warfield. It was written, produced, directed and edited by Sindell, and was rediscovered in a podcast (January, 2022). In 1979 Sindell stepped in when the original director was let go from the movie H.O.T.S. and directed most of the principal photography and earned sole directing credit. A full cast list and credits can be found here. In 1981 Sindell was co-producer on the film Reborn, starring Dennis Hopper and directed by Bigas Luna.

In 1997 he was a credited co-writer on the Rutger Hauer movie Hemoglobin (originally titled Bleeders) alongside Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett – writers of the 1979 Ridley Scott film Alien.

Books

Using the name Gerald Sindell he created and edited Dear, Dear Brenda: The Love Letters of Henry Miller to Brenda Venus.[4] (published by Wm Morrow & Co, 1986). He then authored The Genius Machine: The Eleven Steps That Turn Raw Ideas into Brilliance[5] (New World Library, 2009), the novel, Elinor and Shakespeare[6] (Knightsbridge, 2018), and How Architecture Tells: 9 Realities that will Change the Way You See[7] with author Robert Sternberg, FAIA, and Foreword by the Hon. Penny Pritzker (Oro Editions, 2021.)

Publishing

In 1983, Sindell was introduced to …and Ladies of the Club[8] by Helen Hooven Santmyer and decided, along with Owen Laster[9], to republish and promote it in the US. The media coverage of the book began with a front-page story on the New York Times[10] and it spent 52 weeks on their best sellers’ list. By 1987, Sindell had founded the book publishing companies Tudor Publishing and Knightsbridge Publishing Co, which, amongst others, published; The Rape of Kuwait[11][12] by Jean P. Sasson, a book influential in bringing the USA into the Gulf War[13]; Is Elvis Alive?[14] by Gail Brewer-Giorgio, responsible for the Elvis sightings craze of 1988[15], and many other American authors, including Ralph Nader, and Vincent Bugliosi.

As a publishing consultant he went on to found Thought Leaders International[16], an organization to help create and develop the intellectual property of authors. Through this Sindell has developed and guided the work of authors and institutions, including Jeffrey J Fox[17], Maddy Dychtwald, Zach Dychtwald[18], Larry Ackerman[19], Yahoo![20], The Balanced Scorecard Institute[21], Gino Wickman[22], Jim Taylor and Anat Baniel[23]. In 2001, Sindell appeared on C-Span Book TV's panel broadcast, Book Doctors and Bestsellers[24].

In 1996, Sindell with partner 'Malibu' Kelly Hayes, created and wrote the weekly ski newsletter, The Skier's Edge, distributed by fax from Aspen, Colorado[25].

As a classical music blogger, Sindell writes a series of humorous pieces intended to introduce the pleasures of classical music to young parents and their children. His articles appear on the blog titled, How to Enjoy Classical Music With Your Dog[26].

Management Consulting

As an inventor, Sindell created a global, universal, hierarchical authentication system (patent pending) which has been presented at all the major security forums, including the Financial Services Roundtable (a lobbying organization now the Bank Policy Institute) whose members include all of America's major financial institutions. Also, as inventor, Sindell created, for Accenture Consulting, the first real-time 3D interactive system dynamics model for very large scale implementation management, and presented his system by invitation to most of the IT leaders in the US government at a forum held for that purpose at the National Defense University. Sindell is currently active, as a Partner, in the Identity Dynamics Institute[27], which has developed the first complete universal business dynamics model of the large scale enterprise[28]
