Anticipating that Roe v. Wade would be overturned by the Supreme Court, the New York State assembly introduced legislation on May 11, 2022 to protect abortion rights of women nationwide.[1][2]A10232, known as the Geraldine Santoro act of 2022 and is named after Geraldine "Gerri" Santoro (Gerri Santoro), who died in 1964 of an illegal abortion. The law guarantees that women who live in states that outlaw abortion will not face criminal charges if they come to New York to get an abortion and the state may give aid to women who don’t have the resources to come to New York, making New York a sanctuary state.[3]

Sponsorship and Supporters of the Bill[edit]

Assemblymember Charles Lavine, D-Glen Cove, is sponsoring the legislation.[4] Supporters of the bill include the Assembly co-sponsors Richard Gottfried (D-Manhattan),Catalina Cruz (D-Queens), and Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx), Anna Kelles (D-Ithaca), and Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor).[5]

Lavine stated:

"The Santoro Act is the first step toward creating a nationwide sanctuary network for women in need and the first-ever private-public partnership to build a war chest to ensure reproductive autonomy".

[6]

IndieWire published an Open Letter in Support of Reproductive Freedoms/And in support of New York Assembly Bill A10232by Amy Schumer, Ethan Hawke, Gloria Steinem, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Lange, Maggie Gyllenhaal who wrote:

"We are outraged that, after five decades, the Supreme Court seems poised to turn back the clock and take away Roe v. Wade’s promise of women’s rights to bodily autonomy. We all know that overturning Roe will have a disproportionate impact on women of color and low-income women. We must do everything we can to protect the health and rights of the millions of women, including low-income women, who will imminently lose the right to make decisions about their own bodies"....

Stated Purpose of the Bill[edit]

The Bill states the legislation is an "AN ACT relating to protecting indigent women in the United States in the exercise of their personal control over their bodies and health care decisions and to promote commerce between the states.[8]
