From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Gerard Coll Planas (born in Cardedeu, Barcelona, 1980) is a sociologist, researcher, writer and Spanish professor. He specialises in the studies of gender, sexual sociology and queer studies.

Biography[edit]

Coll Planas received a doctorate in sociology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is a professor as the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia as well as director of the Centro de Estudios Interdiscplinarios de Género (Centre of Interdisciplinary Gender Studies).[1][2]

He has been coordinator of various projects, such as one titled “Contra la homofobia, herramientas para las administraciones locales” (Against homophobia, tools for local governments), sanctioned by the European Commission who included the publication in the Commission’s White Paper against homophobia.[3]

Works[edit]

The work of Coll Planas explores diverse aspects of the LGBT reality, from bullying in schools and structural violence that is suffered, to the social construction of sexual and gender identity. He has also looked into the agency given to non-heterosexual persons to define their own identity.[4][5][6]

Further to this, he has delved into queer theory, utilising social research to reflect upon what is that which defines transsexuality or what differences exist between a sex change and aesthetic surgical intervention.[7] He has also deliberated as to whether there existed a continuum of sexual orientation and gender identity, if it was possible to demarcate the boundary between, for example, effeminate gays and transgender women, as well as what is the role that society, politics, the economy and free will play in these questions.[8]

In other areas of his work he also has explored the relationship that women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer have with their bodies.[9]

Books:[edit]

Dibujando el género (2013).[10]

La carne y la metáfora (2012).[7]

La voluntad y el deseo (2010).[8]

El género desordenado (2010).[11]
