German Company
German Company was two land development companies established in the United States to aid in developing land in Upper Canada by German migrants.
Germany Company of New York 1794
The first iteration was established in 1794 in New York City by a group led by a group that included Samuel Street, New York-Bremen merchants as well as involvement by William Berczy.
The company focused on land grants near Lake Erie in Upper Canada, but later offered land near Grand River in what is now Waterloo, Ontario as well as areas in what is now the west end of Markham, Ontario now called German Mills.[1] Berczy led a group of Germans who had failed to secure land in Western New York near Canandaigua from the London Association (or Genesee Lands) and were planning to obtain land in Upper Canada.
The company settled on land in Markham but a portion of the Berczy settlers moved to land near Newark, Upper Canada. The remaining settlement would eventually fail and lead to Berczy’s career in land development. The German Company ceased operations in 1796.
German Company of Pennsylvania 1803
A second land development was established in Lancaster County in Pennsylvania in 1803.[2] The second iteration was founded by the Erb brothers, Abraham, John, Jacob, as well as a cousin Daniel. Unlike Berczy, the Erbs were successful in their land purchase.
