Geschichte und Gesellschaft. Journal for Historical Social Sciences is a leading German academic journal with a focus on modern history. Its founders, among them Hans-Ulrich Wehler, were closely associated with the so-called Bielefeld School. They aimed to promote social history and in particular interdisciplinary and quantitative approaches to the subject. Today, the journal publishes articles on all topics concerning the research of society and its history, or social history. The journal defines social history as "the history of political, social, economic and cultural phenomena that are anchored in a particular society."[1] While 43-44% of its articles dealt with topics related to political processes between 1975 and 1999,[2] the journal has expanded its focus on articles adopting new approaches in cultural history in the last few years.

The editorial staff has 20 members (as of May 2018) and is headed by German contemporary historians Paul Nolte, Ute Frevert and Chrisoph Conrad.
