Getsafe is a German insurance company providing insurance to its customers via an app..[1]

The company was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Heidelberg, with further offices in London and Berlin[2]. In addition to Germany, Getsafe offers insurance in the UK[3], France[4] and Austria[5]. In October 2021, Getsafe acquired an insurance licence which allows it to provide its own property insurance products in Germany[6]. Getsafe now serves over 500,000 customers[7].

History[edit]

Getsafe was launched in 2015 by co-founders Christian Wiens and Marius Simon. In 2018, Getsafe changed its business proposition from brokering to insurance underwriting[8] and sold its brokerage business to Verivox[9]. In its capacity as an underwriter, Getsafe offers various types of property insurance, including personal liability insurance, legal insurance, supplementary dental insurance, household contents insurance and motor insurance[10]

In 2020, Getsafe established a subsidiary in the UK[11]. The insurtech company expanded into the Austrian market in June 2022, followed by France in January 2023[12]

In October 2021, Getsafe received its insurance licence[13]/[14] from the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, BaFin, making it the first property insurer to operate under BaFin's stricter requirements for new licences[15]. Getsafe GmbH is the parent company of Getsafe Insurance AG, the risk carrier. The first insurance products offered under the company's own licence were personal liability insurance, household contents insurance and dog liability insurance.

Getsafe initially introduced digital accident insurance[16] as its first foray into the life insurance and health insurance category before expanding to other products in cooperation with partners[17].

After a Series A financing round of €15 million in June 2019[18]/[19], Getsafe raised an additional €25 million in its Series B round[20]/[21] in December 2020, in which the reinsurer Swiss Re and CommerzVentures took part[22]. In 2021, the start-up secured new investors and raised a further €55 million in capital[23], finalising their Series B. Hexal AG founders and Biontech investors Andreas and Thomas Strüngmann participated in this financing round through their investment company, Santo Venture Capital[24]

Services[edit]

Getsafe offers digital insurance in the liability and legal, housing, health, pet and finance categories. In cooperation with partners, Getsafe has also expanded its product portfolio to include life and pension insurance products.
