He was the founder of the Satpur Kamil Madrasa in Sylhet.

Early life and family[edit]

Satpuri Saheb was born on 8 August 1920 to a Bengali family of Pirs in the village of Satpur in Lamakazi, Bishwanath, Sylhet district. He was the fifth child of Pir Hasan Ali and Khadijah Begum. His lineage is as follows: Ghulam Husayn bin Hasan Ali bin Alhaj Ghulam Nabi ibn Shah Jamsher ibn Shah Basit. Shah Basit was a direct descendant of Shah Muhammad, who was said to have converted to Islam when Shah Jalal came to Sylhet. Satpuri saheb had two brothers and three sisters. His younger brother Alhaj Maulawi Ghulam Hafiz Satpuri was an allah-wala person.

Education[edit]

Satpuri saheb was given tarbiyat-e-namaz and tagid of performing tahajjud from his mother Khadijah Begum. She would push him to go and pray fajr at the masjid from a very early age. After studying under his mother, he joined the local Lamakazi Madrasa and studied under Mawlana Niamatullah Govindanagari of Chhatak. After that, he studied at the Dhakauttar-Ranaping Arabia Husainia Madrasa for some time. Then he enrolled at the Sylhet Government Alia Madrasah. The Qaderia Scholarship was awarded for good results at the madrasa and Satpuri would always earn this scholarship. In 1945, graduated from Sylhet Alia Madrasa with a Kamil-e-Hadith and Gold Award. After his exams, he began his hifz-e-quran under Hafiz Abdul Wahhab in the nearby village of Mirpur and completed 18 paras with him.

He was a mureed of Alhaj Pir Hamidullah Qaimganji in tasawwuf.

Personal life[edit]

Satpuri saheb first married a woman from Haripur village but she died leaving no children. He then married the daughter of Jonab Niamatullah of Telikuna. She later died leaving one son, Mawlana Abu Saeed Muhammad Ghilman. His third wife was the daughter of Maulana Asad Ali of Korpara village. He had one son and one daughter with her. His son was Maulawi Abul Fattah Muhammad Salman. His fourth wife was a woman from Hazarigaon. He had three daughters and one son with her. His son was Maulana Abu Jafar Muhammad Noman, who is a teacher at Satpur Kamil Madraaa.

Career[edit]

After completing kamil in 1945, Satpuri saheb worked on establishing his own madrasa. His first students were his maternal cousin, Maulana Abdussalam of Telikuna (later the principal and professor of Arabic at Satpur Kamil Madrasa) and nephew Mukhlisur Rahman. He taught them in a masjid near his home. In 1948, he eventually founded the Hasania Alia Madrasah in Satpur. The first jalsa was held after Husayn returned from Hajj in 1952, and had Hormuz Ullah Shayda as the guest of honour. Under the instruction of his pir-o-murshid Alhaj Hamidullah Qaimganji, the madrasa was renamed to Satpur Alia Madrasa. It gained dakhil status in 25 November 1958, alim status in 23 January 1960, fazil status in 12 June 1962 and kamil hadith status in 18 February 1965. When it gained kamil status, the muhaddiseen of Satpur Alia Madrasa were Allama Habibur Rahman (former principal Ichhamati), Mawlana Abdul Jabbar Gotargrami, Mawlana Mutahir Ali, Mawlana Izzatullah Jainagari, Mawlana Rafiq Ahmad and others. Allama Fultali and Hormuzullah Shayda would give dars-e-hadith in this madrasa sometimes.
