Ghulam Mustafa Mazari
Template:Prod llm/dated Ghulam Mustafa Mazari (alias Doctor Saeen Shah Jee Mazari; died 2017) was a Pakistani militant and the primary mastermind behind the 2017 Sehwan suicide bombing which killed over 80 people. He served as a regional commander (Ameer) for the Islamic State (ISIL) in Sindh Balochistan and Punjab.[1]
Early life and militant background
Ghulam Mustafa Mazari hailed from village of Basti-Abdullah Rojhan Mazari Rajanpur District. He descended from the Sadwani (Sodvani) clan of the Mazari tribe of Balochistan.[1] He was a part of Baloch diaspora who migrated to Punjab from Balochistan.[2] Basti Abdullah village is the birthplace of Muhammad Abdullah Ghazi, the father of Maulana Abdul Aziz & Abdul Rasheed Ghazi. He belonged to a highly conservative background and was a close relative of Lal Masjid clerics Maulana Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rasheed Ghazi. it is said in his village that he was a quack doctor and had a small clinic in the area. but after the incident of 2007 Lal Masjid Ghulam Mustafa Mazari sought to get revenge and joined different terrorist organization and has been away from home.
He initially began his militant activities with sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). During his time with LeJ Ghulam Mustafa Mazari relocated to the mountainous militant strongholds of Mastung Balochistan, before eventually defecting to join the newly formed regional branch of the Islamic State.[3]
Role in the Sehwan bombing
In February 2017, Ghulam Mustafa Mazari organized a terror cell in Dera Murad Jamali to target Lal Shahbaz Qalandar shrine in Sehwan. He coordinated the acquisition of a suicide vest and recruited associates including Nadir Ali Jakhrani and suicide bomber Babar Brohi. Ghulam Mustafa Mazari actively participated in execution of the plot personally delivering the explosive jacket to his accomplices on the eve of the attack and driving the getaway vehicle that extracted the facilitators after the blast.[2]
Death
Following the Sehwan suicide bombing, Pakistani security forces launched sweeping counter-terrorism operations across the country. Ghulam Mustafa Mazari was killed in an armed operation by security forces in Mastung, Balochistan later in 2017.[4]
