Gianluca Grimalda is an italian behavioral economist at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and a member of Scientist Rebellion.
Academic career[edit]
Grimalda obtained a Bachelor's degree in economics from Bocconi University, Milan and subsequently pursued a Ph.D. at University of Southampton. In 2013, he joined Kiel Institute as a full-time senior researcher. His main research interest lies in experimental behavior economics, particularly in human cooperation and income inequality. He participated in the OECD-led Trustlab project.[1]
Environmental activism[edit]
In 2022, Grimalda participated in a protest at Autostadt Wolfsburg by glueing onto the floor at the Porsche exhibit hall.[2] In 2023, he made international headlines by refusing to fly via plane from a field research assignment in Papua New Guinea. Instead, Grimalda intends to slow travel via container ships and travelling via land to save 3,6 tons of CO2 equivalent. His employer, Kiel Institute, threatened him with termination of his employment contract should he not arrive via plane. Grimalda gained vast sympathy amongst climate activists such as Luisa Neubauer[3][4]
