Gideon Arthurs
Gideon Arthurs is a prominent Canadian arts administrator, recognized for his leadership in major theatre institutions and dedication to diversity and community engagement. Early Career & Community Engagement
Originally from Toronto, Gideon Arthurs began his performing arts career as a child actor, making his debut in 1988 at the Théâtre Français de Toronto. He later trained in theatre at the Claude Watson School for the Arts and Brown University before progressing into arts administration roles focused on growth and inclusion, including positions at Soulpepper Theatre and the National Theatre School of Canada.
Career
Toronto Fringe Festival (2008 - 2012) From 2008 - 2012, Arthurs was the Executive Director of the Toronto Fringe Festival. During this time, he oversaw the launch of a secondary festival, expanded audiences, and created a subsidized rehearsal space for independent artists [2].
Tarragon Theatre (2012–2014) Arthurs served as the General Manager of Tarragon Theatre from 2012 - 2014, leading major facility and audience development initiatives [3].
National Theatre School of Canada (2014 – 2022) Appointed CEO of The National Theatre School of Canada in 2014, Arthurs became one of Canada's youngest such leaders[4]. He led institutional modernization and community outreach, including expanding programming to over 7,700 participants across 350+ communities via the Sears DramaFest[5]. He also initiated Indigenous artist residencies, an Artistic Leadership Residency program, and launched a Centre for Theatre Research and Development[6].
Soulpepper Theatre Company & Young Centre (2022 – Present) Arthurs was announced as the Executive Director of Soulpepper Theatre Company and the Young Centre for Performing arts on January 10, 2022, beginning full-time service in May[7]. He is married to award-winning playwright Erin Shields, with whom he has two daughters.[11]
