Gigaclear[1] is a fibre-to-the-building Internet service provider (ISP) based in Abingdon, England, operating the largest exclusively rural fibre to the premises network in the UK.

History[edit]

Founded in 2010, Gigaclear is a full fibre broadband provider, primarily in rural areas of the UK. Gigaclear's first network build was in Appleton, Oxfordshire[2]. Gigaclear Ltd is principally owned by Infracapital[3], a European infrastructure investor. Gigaclear's networks are developed through commercial investment and the Government-subsided Broadband Delivery UK programme (BDUK)[4]. They build only fibre-to-the-property (FTTP) broadband, which uses Smart WiFi Mesh technology provided by Linksys routers. Since September 2022, Gigaclear has begun preparing for the 2025 switch off of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) by introducing their Digital Voice Home Phone (VoIP) service, which allows calls to be made and received through their Linksys routers.

In 2017 and 2018, Gigaclear was awarded the Best Rural Broadband Provider award by the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA)[5]. They again won the award in 2020[6].

In September 2018, Gigaclear was ranked at number 23 in the Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100 for the fastest growing tech organisations in the UK alongside Hyperoptic.[7]

In February 2022 Gigaclear was awarded the Best Rural Coverage award at the Choose Broadband Awards.[8]

As of November 2022, Gigaclear is operating in 22 counties[9] across England, and in May 2022 crossed the 300,000 premises threshold.[10]

Gigaclear is investing £700m to reach 500,000 UK premises by the end of 2023.[11]

In November 2022, Gigclear began the expansion of their network into Derbyshire[12], the 23rd county they will operate in.[13]

In 2023 Gigaclear expanded into an additional 2000 properties in Northamptonshire[14]
