Gil Fitch

Script error: No such module "AfC submission catcheck". Gilbert "Gil" Fitch (December 24, 1909 – May 22, 2005) was an American basketball player. He played six seasons with the Philadelphia SPHAS and one season with the Philadelphia Passon.

Professional career[edit]

Fitch played three years collegiately for Temple University, before beginning his professional career with the Philadelphia SPHAS of the Eastern Basketball League (EBL). In his rookie season, he averaged 2.2 points. The SPHAS made the 1932-33 EBL Finals but lost to the Trenton Bengals in Game 4. Fitch played in all four games of the Finals, averaging 3.8 points.[1]

The following season, the SPHAS transferred to the American Basketball League (ABL). Fitch played 14 games with the Philadelphia Passon of the EBL, before returning to play for the SPHAS for the remainder of the 1933-34 ABL season. Fitch averaged almost 7 points per game with the Passon, and averaged 2.4 points in 25 games with the SPHAS.[2] His team qualified for the Finals and won the championship against the Trenton Moose in the team's inaugural ABL season. Playing in 38 games, Fitch averaged 3.5 points for the 1934-35 season. The SPHAs faced the Brooklyn Visitations in a first round tiebreaker. The Visitations won the series 2-1.[4]

Fitch averaged 3.4 points in 36 games in the 1935-36 ABL season. The SPHAS won the first half of the season, thus qualifying for the Finals - where they would face the Visitations. Philadelphia prevailed, defeating the Visitations in Game 7 of the Finals 47-34.[5]

Fitch played 32 games in the 1936-37 season, averaging 2.4 points. The SPHAS reached returned to the Finals once again, and defeated the Jersey Reds 4-3. Fitch played in 5 of the SPHAS' 6 Finals games, averaging 4.6 points.[6]

The 1937-38 season was Fitch's last. He averaged 3 points in 39 games. [7]His team compiled a 23-19 record, failing to reach the playoffs.

Besides basketball, Fitch was a talented saxophone and clarinet player and formed his own orchestra. The orchestra played after the SPHAs home games at Broadwood Hotel ballroom.[8]Fitch served for the U.S. Army in World War II and moved to Los Angeles following the war. [9]
