Giles Taylor (born February 1968) is a British car designer who has achieved notable designs for well-known car marques throughout his career to date. He is the global vice president of design and chief creative officer for FAW Group China.[1] – the second largest Chinese automotive manufacturer.[2]

Education and career[edit]

Taylor was born in Somerset, UK and educated in Malvern, Worcestershire. He began his higher education at Coventry University in 1986 where he gained a BA (hons) in industrial design transportation. During his year in industry, he held an internship with  Mercedes-Benz in Sindelfingen, Germany. He went on to gain a Masters Degree (MDes RCA) at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1992 with the Giorgetto Giugiaro Award for Innovation.

In 1992, Taylor joined Automobiles Citroën at their Paris design studio. During his 5 years as an exterior Designer, he provided the exterior design for the Xsara Compact Sedan[3] and exterior concept for the C3 city car 2002[4]

He moved to Jaguar Cars Ltd, Coventry in 1997 as a Design Manager for XJ.[5] In 2001 he became chief designer for the Jaguar XK and XJ car lines and led the teams responsible for the 2006 all new XK and XKR as well as the 2010 all new XJ[6]. Both designs went on to achieve Design awards in the UK, US and Europe.

In 2011, Taylor joined the BMW Group and took on the position as Head of Exterior Design for Rolls-Royce Motorcars based in Munich, Germany[7]. He was subsequently appointed to the position of Director of Design and Board Member for Rolls-Royce Motorcars in June 2012.[8]

His notable achievements during that time include the design of the 2016 Dawn,[9] 2017 Phantom VIII limousine,[10] 2018 Cullinan SUV[11] and all new Ghost limousine.[12] He also designed the one-off coachbuilt Rolls-Royce Phantom Sweptail[13] for a VIP client and on reveal at the 2018 Lake Como Concours d’ Elegance, it was billed as the world’s most expensive car.[14]

Taylor left his position at Rolls-Royce in May 2018 to take up the role of vice president of global design and chief creative officer for FAW Group.[15] His VP design role includes responsibilities for China's oldest and most luxurious car brand Hongqi or "Redflag", as well as Bestune Cars and Jiefang Truck brands.

Along with design influence for the 2020 H9 mid size sedan and electric E-HS9 SUV products[16], Taylor was also responsible for setting up the Munich based FAW Global Advanced Design Studio which contributes designs for the main brand headquarters based in Changchun, Jilin province, China.[17]

Taylor is an active Automotive Charity Chairman in his position as Court Assistant to the Coachmakers of London Livery Company which was founded by King Charles II in 1677.
