Gillian Smith (born c. 1973) is a non-profit executive in Toronto, Ontario.
Smith is the Chief Marketing Officer for the Toronto Region Board of Trade[1] and former Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer for the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.[2]
Non-profit sector[edit]
In May 2015, Smith joined the Toronto Region Board of Trade.[3]She leads a team responsible for member relations, reputation management and majority of the organization’s revenue.[1]
Prior to her role with the chamber of commerce, Smith led the Institute for Canada Citizenship (ICC).[4] The organization, co-founded by Adrienne Clarkson and John Ralston Saul, delivers programs and special projects that inspire inclusion, create opportunities to connect, and encourage active citizenship. Founder and co-chair Rt Hon. Adrienne Clarkson praised Gillian Smith’s appointment to Executive Director and CEO in September of 2010 stating:
"We are absolutely thrilled to have Gillian on board. Her focus will be on dynamic, next-generation leadership for the ICC and her extensive background in volunteer and community work will be a huge asset to the organization. Her vision, enthusiasm and energy will propel our organization forward and continue to build our profile across the country."[4]
As a turn-around CEO, Smith tripled the ICC's revenue and rebuilt the management team.[1]
Smith has also contributed to a series of community boards and committees. She is a member of the Board of Directors for Business for the Arts[5], a Co-Chair of the Curator’s Circle Committee for the Art Gallery of Ontario[6], a director for Culture Days and participates in an advisory capacity with the G(irls)20, CivicAction and Lifeline Syria.
Formerly, Smith was Chair of the Toronto Public Library Foundation, Chair of The Stop Community Food Centre and Vice Chair for Community Food Centres Canada[7][8]. She was also part of the inaugural cohort for CivicAction’s Diversity Fellow program in 2009.[9]
Private sector[edit]
Prior to her roles in the non-profit sector, Smith spent more than 15 years in the private sector, primarily working in corporate communications and in corporate affairs. Her most recent position was as Senior Advisor, Corporate Affairs for Royal Bank of Canada. Prior to that she held senior-level positions focused on media relations, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and crisis management with Aeroplan, Parmalat Canada, Edelman and others.[3]
Politics[edit]
In June 2017, Smith announced the she was seeking the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario nomination in the provincial riding of University—Rosedale for the next election, expected in 2018.[10][11] Smith was nominated as the candidate on June 21, 2017.[12]
Personal life[edit]
Smith attended Queen’s University and completed a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Sociology (major), History and French (dual minors) in 1996. While studying she mentored low-income students in the public-school system.[2]
Smith lives in Toronto with her husband Paul G. Smith, twin girls and stepson.[13]
