Gillian (Jill) Teresa Manthorpe is Professor of Social Work and Director of the NIHR Policy Research Unit in Health and Social Care Workforce at King's College London.[1] Her research interests relate to social work and social care, specifically health and disability.[2] In 2022 Manthorpe was included in the Queen's Birthday Honours list and was made Commander of the British Empire (CBE).[3][4]

Education and career[edit]

In 1977, Manthorpe's first postgraduate position was with Age Concern cementing her interest in ageism and gerontology.[5] From September 1983 to July 1985 Manthorpe attended the University of Hull to study on a Master's degree programme MA Social Policy.[6]

Research[edit]

Manthorpe has published extensively in social work and social care research. She has a particular focus on linking research, policy and practice, most notably in relation to ageism and gerontology. In recent years, she has focussed on evidencing the lived experience of social care workers and those in the social care system as it was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting policies.

Awards and honours[edit]

In 2022, she was awarded a CBE for services to Social Work and Social Care Research in the 2022 Queen’s Birthday Honours.[7][8]

In 2021, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Society of Gerontology.[9]

Since 2016, she is a Trustee at The Orders of Saint John Care Trust.[10]

Since 2014, she is a Trustee at the Centre for Policy on Ageing.[11]
